A brief HISTORICAL SUMMARY:
Originally, all races Japanese canines were small to medium in size and there were no large breeds of any size. From 1603, from the region of Akita, the dogs named "Akita Matagis" (size dogs the average for bear hunting) were used as dogs of
combat. Since 1868, the breed has been crossed with the Tosa and with Mastiffs. As a result of these crosses, the size of the breed increased, but some of the characteristics of Spitz dogs disappeared.

in 1908, dog fighting was banned. The race made
nevertheless preserved and improved; it later became a large Japanese breed, and in 1931, 9 elite dogs were designated as "Historical Monuments".

During the Second World War (1939-1945) it was common to use dog skins to make clothing military. The police ordered the capture and forfeiture of all dogs except the German Shepherds who were reserved for military tasks. Some amateurs tried to circumvent the law by crossing their dogs with German Shepherds.

At the end of the Second World War, the number of Akitas being dangerously reduced and the dogs came in three types different: 1) Akitas Matagis, 2) Akitas fighting dogs and 3) German Akitas/Shepherds. The situation of the race was seriously disturbed. during the period of the restoration of the pure race after the war, Kongo-go, a dog from the Dewa bloodline, enjoys popularity temporary, but extremely important; this dog had externally the characteristic features of Mastiffs' influence and of German banks. The number of Akita breeders increased and the breed became very popular with the public. However, enlightened amateurs refused to accept this type of dog as a true Japanese breed and tried to eliminate the characteristics of foreign races by crossing with Matagi Akitas; the goal was to find the original type of the breed. These successful efforts
have stabilized the pure strain of large Akita well known nowadays.
